About Me

My name is David Lieu and I started Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) in June of 2010.

Here's my history:
  1. Gracie Barra San Diego June 2010 - April 2014: Head Professor was Dominic Parker. Assistant Professor was Steve "The All American" Gable. I got both my Blue and Purple Belts here. After my Purple Belt, I had to take about 6 months off because I pulled my hamstring which caused sciatica. The school closed down while I was on this break.
  2. ATOS HQ Nov. 2014 - Nov. 2016: Head Professor was Andre Galvao. Assistant Professors were JT Torres, Michael Liera Jr., Rolando Samson, and other champions. This was really an eye opening experience into how World Champions train at this world famous school. Also, changed my whole perspective on the whole Self Defensive Jiu Jitsu vs Sports Jiu Jitsu debate. I left ATOS because I moved to another city.
  3. Gracie Barra Escondido March 2017 to present: Head Professor is Magid Hage. Assistant Professor is "Little" Magid, aka "Mr. Baseball Bat", aka "Gorilla Hands". I picked GB Escondido because Professor Magid was very welcoming and knew my first professor, Dominic. It also helped that I met his son, "Little" Magid when I was at Dominic's, so I knew that this school wasn't some random "pop-up shop" and that the jiu jitsu here was legit. Professor Magid and I were able to "click" over the 2013 photo of me and his son.
Interesting people I have met and trained with along the way:
December 7, 2019 - Magid "Gorilla Hands" Hage IV, Myself, Professor Magid Hage

August 13, 2016 - Anderson "The Spider" Silva, Myself
Feb.6, 2015 - Demian Maia, Myself, Professor Andre Galvao
